Nintendo Finally Unveils the Switch 2, But Is it Worth Enough to Upgrade? (Opinion Piece)

I know that just by judging the title alone, most of you are like, “Duh, yeah it’s worth the upgrade mainly for Nintendo exclusives!”, but that’s not what I’m asking. The main reason I asked this question is simple: Is it worth upgrading to Switch 2 for more power that is nearly identical to a price point at PS5’s entry? This question may seem vague, but judging the price leak I’m about to get to seems a little too much for what Nintendo may be asking for. For the diehards of the brand, that’s an easy answer because they love the exclusives Nintendo puts out from Zelda to Mario and even games like Animal Crossing and more. But for the hardcore gamers that game on multiple consoles, many, including myself, seem to be on the fence about spending $400 on the Switch 2 if the leak is revealed to be true.

A source from one prominent leaker on X has suggested that the highly anticipated Switch 2 will cost around that price in Canada, which is roughly equivalent to spending approximately $279 (U.S. Dollars) when converted. The original Nintendo Switch made its debut at a retail price of $300 (U.S.), a figure that was fair and justified for the average consumer at the time. Maintaining that same price point will not only be ideal but also represent the sweet spot for Nintendo if they wish to replicate the remarkable success they experienced with the original Switch. In contrast, having it priced close to the PS5’s current price point could potentially hurt its market performance, particularly among individuals who are eager to dive into games like the soon-to-be-released GTA VI, which it is reasonable to assume Sony has secured the marketing rights for. Given that the Switch 2 will not possess the capabilities to run GTA VI, many gamers might likely decide to skip out on the Switch 2 completely, unless the price point is appealingly $100 cheaper than the PS5 digital edition. While nothing has been publicly announced yet and these leaks can sometimes be unreliable, for now, we will have to patiently await a confirmation from Nintendo regarding how much the Switch 2 will ultimately cost and when eager gamers can finally get their hands on one during the highly anticipated launch.

The latest Mario Kart being shown on Nintendo Switch 2

During the exciting reveal event, Nintendo proudly showcased the latest entry in the beloved Mario Kart franchise, which appears to be the long-awaited Mario Kart 9 that fans have been eagerly anticipating for years. Apart from the captivating trailer, some astute gamers have noticed an impressive feature: there are 24 starting line positions that will be in play, marking a groundbreaking first in the history of the Mario Kart franchise. Just imagine the thrilling chaos of going head-to-head online against all 23 other opponents, each vying to claim the coveted first-place position.

What truly intrigued me during the Switch 2 reveal was not just the fact that it is larger, but also the remarkable enhancements made to the joycons, which have received significant upgrades as well. The integrated colors of the new joycons appear to be much more vibrant and appealing than the outer appearance of the original Switch joycons, adding an extra layer of excitement. Additionally, the newly designed magnetic barriers are a notable advantage, as they provide a more satisfying experience when taking the joycons apart, rather than the previous method of sliding them up or down for detaching and re-attaching. While the specifications of the Switch 2 have not been officially disclosed yet, rumors suggest that it packs a punch similar in power to a base PS4, which would undoubtedly prove beneficial for third-party developers eager to create and bring their games to Nintendo’s groundbreaking new console entry.

Games like Red Dead Redemption 2 may indeed be ported over to the highly anticipated Switch 2, which can finally handle the console-handheld hybrid experience with ease. We’ll find out much more on April 2nd during Nintendo’s Direct presentation, where the company is expected to reveal crucial details about the Switch 2’s capabilities and specifications. This will help answer the burning questions on what everyone is wondering: is upgrading really worth it? This is particularly important for playing not only beloved Nintendo exclusives, but also third-party AAA games that demand a substantial amount of raw power for gamers looking to enjoy high-quality experiences while on the go.
